Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Roses Valley – Dades Valley

Depart at 8 am from your hotel or riad in Marrakech to cross the High Atlas mountains. From these mountains, the views over the valleys and the Berber villages perched on the mountainsides, sometimes barely distinguishable from the mountains themselves, are spectacular. Driving north, we will leave the main road and follow a smaller road to Afterwards we will visit the universal Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou Kasbah as it has been named by UNESCO in 1987. Ait Benhaddou is the World Heritage site that has been used as a backdrop for more than 20 films including “Gladiator” “Indiana Jones” and “Lawrence of Arabia”. Enjoy a walk to explore the traditional Moroccan style of architecture in which the Kasbahs are built…, here we will have lunch. The road then continues along the Ounila valley, past beautiful, prosperous villages. We will follow it to Skoura Oasis, the location of numerous ancient kasbahs. From here, the route will take us through Kelaat M’Gouna, the Valley of Roses. Overnight in Dades valley… (HB)

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra gorges – Rissani – Ziz Oases – Merzouga – Camel trekking

From Dades valley, we will head to Merzouga passing through the Berber village of Tinghir and the Todra Gorge where the cliffs are as high as 600m and only 10m wide. We will then pass through several Berber villages, stopping for lunch at either Tinjdad. After lunch, we continue our way, and from Erfoud, it’s another 40 minutes across an immense palm oasis and a vast area of stony desert to get Merzouga, where we’ve selected a charming kasbah hotel on the outskirts of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Then at 4 pm we will ride our camels, trekking across the desert, will take us to a Berber camp in the middle of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, some rising of 820 feet), the highest in North Africa. The camp consists of three comfortable Berber tents equipped with mattresses, linen, toilets, a restaurant, and a kitchen. The evening will consist shooting stars show, then dinner followed by a traditional music show and overnight in a nomad camp in tents. (HB)

Day 3: Merzouga Culture and traditions – Tea with Nomads!

If you can rouse yourself early in the morning you can be rewarded with stunning views of the dunes at sunrise from the high dunes, have a cup of tea then return to the Hotel by camel. You will then have a time to freshen up with a shower and enjoy a breakfast. After breakfast, relax for an hour, We go in 4 WD off-road tour around the dunes via the oasis of Merzouga, the nomadic depository, Khamlia village to visit the Gnawa Black people’s village, originally slaves brought from black africa, to listen to their spiritual music, then continue to meet desert nomads in their tents, and discover a new sense of life. Not far away there’s the lake of Merzouga, with its bird populations, you’ll leave for Rissani. Once called Sijilmassa, this was the meeting place for the salt caravans, coming from Timbuktu in Mali. Here you’ll walk through the souk, selling spices, vegetables and cloths. After a lunch pizza in Rissani you will travel back to your amazing Kasbah hotel at edge of the golden sand dunes, relax beside the swimming pool, at night you will meet a desert blues band live show. Day 4: Merzouga – Erfoud – Ziz Oases – Midelt – Azrou – Ifran – Fes

After breakfast, we will drive retracing your steps through Erfoud to the dramatic Ziz Gorge, a spectacular gash in the hills that surround Ziz oases, the largest oases in Morocco. The region is dotted with deserted kasbahs, palm trees and mud-brick villages creating a photographer’s paradise. Lunch in Midelt, approached through a bleak plain of scrub and desert. The dramatic peaks of the High Atlas, rising behind the town, provide a spectacular background. The wilderness you cross is incredibly diverse and can vary from rocky, sun-baked plains, to cedar-clad mountains and deep canyons providing spectacular views as you head across the scenery changes around you. In the hills south of Azrou you may be lucky to spot a troupe of Barbary Apes; in fact not a true ape but a species of Macaque monkey. We head on to Ifran, the Switzerland of Morocco.. Having crossed the plains you come to the evocative city of Fes, the cultural capital, is one of the most complete medieval Islamic cities in the world. Our guide will make sure you reach your chosen Riad or Hotel. Here we will leave at your Riad or Hotel at the end of the 3 days tour.
